RYA Competent Crew

The RYA Competent Crew sailing course has been developed specifically to teach complete beginners the basics of seamanship, safety, helming, wind-awareness and general living aboard a boat to really help you to understand and enjoy your sailing.

By the end of the five day course, you will confidently be able to hoist the sails, helm effectively and manoeuvre the yacht by tacking and gybing, reef the mainsail, keep a safe lookout and very importantly, be able to tie those essential knots. All sailing tuition takes place onboard, there is no classroom element or exam.

Our training courses are run on new, modern yachts, complete with on-board heating for winter course dates. You will start and finish in our base at Port Hamble Marina.

Format

Join the yacht in Port Hamble Marina on 7pm the night before the start, for a boat briefing so that you are ready to set sail bright and early on the first morning. For example, for Mon-Fri courses – meet 7pm on Sunday evening.

Stay on board throughout the 5-days and return about 4pm on the last day. Maximum 5 crew + instructor on board. Minimum 3 crew + Instructor.

Most of our Competent Crew courses are 5 consecutive days, but we do offer a limited number of courses run over two weekends, to take advantage of bank holidays.
